Geriatric Psychiatry

Geriatric Psychiatry

Individuals 65 and older will receive the same comprehensive assessment and clinical interview, in addition to a neurocognitive screening. Our clinicians will screen for symptoms unique to an older population, which may include memory loss, mood symptoms, difficulty coping with losses and life transitions, and the psychological and social stresses of aging. There will be a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of physical and medical illnesses, as well dementia or other cognitive disorders. Additionally, there will be a reevaluation of any existing medication regimens, with an emphasis on identifying drug interactions and eliminating additive side effects or polypharmacy (multiple drugs) whenever possible. As with adults, an individualized treatment plan will be formulated to meet the unique goals and needs of each patient, and will often include psychotherapy.
