Howard Hao, M.D.

Dr. Hao (rhymes with “now”) received his Bachelors in Biology from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1999. He received his Doctorate in Medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Biomedical Sciences in 2003. From there, he returned to his native hometown of New York City and completed a residency in Psychiatry at the Zucker Hillside Hospital/Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2007. He was a Chief Resident at the same program from 2006-2007. Dr. Hao then completed a Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine (formerly known as Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry) also at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2008. Dr. Hao is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

During his training in medical school, Dr. Hao became especially interested in how medical illnesses, such as cancer or heart disease, can affect a person emotionally as well as physically. He noticed that people often also suffered mentally when sick and wanted to learn more on how to better globally help people heal from illness. This experience also piqued his interest in how people’s minds work from a deeper sense as he noticed that sometimes people were not equipped to deal with unpleasant emotions or memories from their lives. This led him to pursue further training as a psychoanalyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education/NYU Langone Medical Center.

For a year after psychiatry training, Dr. Hao had worked as an attending psychiatrist for the outpatient department at Zucker Hillside. He then worked for four years as a consultant psychiatrist on the medical floors of Long Island Jewish. There, he enjoyed working closely with other types of physicians, residents, and students in helping them understand that patients are people with feelings and reactions, and not “just illnesses.” During this period, Dr. Hao decided to branch out to better serve the community and moved into private practice in Great Neck, Long Island. He has been enjoying work in his private practice full-time since 2010.

Dr. Hao is very excited to be a part of the Manhattan Mind Health and Wellness consultation team. He firmly believes that a well-rounded and comprehensive treatment approach to mental health ultimately leads to better lives for people.
